Tiggo 4 range leads the way as Chery South Africa records another strong month in sales

Tiggo 4 range leads the way as Chery South Africa records another strong month in sales

  • Tiggo 4 range dominates sales with 1,725 units, ranking as South Africa’s third best-selling passenger vehicle in October 2025.
  • Consistent demand sees 4,889 Tiggo 4 range units sold in Q3 2025, reinforcing its popularity among local motorists.
  • Chery’s hybrid momentum grows, with the Tiggo Cross CSH Hybrid now one of South Africa’s best-selling electrified vehicles.

October 2025 proved to be another standout month for Chery South Africa, with the Chinese automaker recording cumulative sales of 2,210 units. The Tiggo 4 range lineup led the charge, accounting for 1,725 units and ranking as the third best-selling passenger vehicle in the country for the month, outperforming several established rivals.

The Tiggo 4 lineup (which comprises the Tiggo 4 and Tiggo Cross models) offers 13 derivatives across entry-level, commercial, and hybrid variants, giving it broad appeal. This variety, coupled with strong value for money, continues to resonate with South African motorists. With a starting price of R269,900, the Tiggo 4 Cross provides an accessible entry point into the Chery family without compromising on luxury and convenience features or safety.

“We’re thrilled that the Tiggo 4 range continues to capture the imagination of South African motorists,” commented Jay Jay Botes, General Manager for Chery South Africa. “This achievement reflects our ongoing commitment to delivering vehicles that combine advanced technology, striking design, and exceptional value. The Tiggo 4 range embodies everything Chery stands for—quality, innovation, and a genuine understanding of our customers’ needs.”

Sales of the Tiggo 4 lineup have remained consistently strong, with 1,727 units sold in September 2025, 1,568 in August, and 1,604 in July. Third-quarter sales reached an impressive 4,899 units, underscoring sustained demand for the compact crossover.

Introduced this year, the Tiggo Cross CSH Hybrid has quickly become one of South Africa’s best-selling electrified vehicles, recording 122 units sold in August 2025. This comes as no surprise, as the HEV—with a combined fuel consumption figure of 5.4L.100 km—remains the country’s most affordable hybrid, at R439,900.

As for the rest of the lineup, the newly introduced, top-of-the-range Tiggo 9 registered 41 units in September 2025, while the Tiggo 8 and Tiggo 7 achieved 121 and 323 units, respectively, highlighting Chery’s growing momentum across multiple segments.

Chery’s NEV line-up gains strong traction in South Africa

Chery has become one of South Africa’s leading new energy vehicle brands, with four electrified models launched since June.

In August, the brand sold 227 NEVs, led by the Tiggo 4 Cross HEV—South Africa’s most affordable hybrid at R439,900.

Chery now offers both the most affordable hybrid and the most affordable plug-in hybrid in the country, putting advanced technology within easier reach.

Chery has quickly grown into one of the strongest names in the South African new energy vehicle (NEV) space, with more local buyers choosing its hybrid and plug-in hybrid models. With four models to choose from—the earliest of which were launched in June—the automaker has made a big impression on the local automotive landscape and is now one of the leading purveyors of electrified vehicles in South Africa.

In August, the CSH line-up—comprising the hybrid Tiggo 4 Cross CSH, and the Tiggo 7 CSH, Tiggo 8 CSH, and Tiggo 9 CSH plug-in hybrids—achieved a combined total of 227 sales for the month, making it one of the best-performing NEV ranges in the country.

“This is a clear sign that drivers are ready to embrace electrification when it’s delivered with the right balance of technology, efficiency, and value,” said Jay Jay Botes, General Manager for Chery South Africa.

The Tiggo 4 Cross CSH, which holds the title of South Africa’s most affordable hybrid vehicle with a starting price of R439,900, was Chery’s best-seller, accounting for 122 units. It was followed by the Tiggo 7 CSH (50 units), the Tiggo 8 CSH (33 units), and the Tiggo 9 CSH (22 units). With an all-electric range of 160 km, the Tiggo 9 AWD Vanguard CSH offers one of the longest electric ranges of any plug-in hybrid in South Africa—all at a price under R1 million.

Value is at the heart of Chery’s NEV offering. Not only is the Tiggo 4 Cross the most affordable hybrid in the country, but the Tiggo 7 CSH is also South Africa’s most affordable plug-in hybrid, priced at R599,900.

Chery’s approach is simple: advanced cars should be within reach of more people. While electrification is often reserved for the premium end of the market, Chery has focused on democratising hybrid and plug-in hybrid technology. By offering feature-rich, efficient cars at competitive prices, the automaker has made it easier for South Africans to take their first step into electrified driving.

“Our goal has always been to make smarter, cleaner driving accessible to more people,” added Botes. “Seeing how quickly drivers have responded to our line-up of new energy models shows that South Africans are ready for this shift, and we’re proud to be the brand helping them make it.”

This strong momentum is only the beginning. Chery’s rise in the new energy vehicle segment underlines its commitment to reshaping what drivers can expect from electrification: turning advanced technology into something more people can experience, enjoy, and afford.

Chery to stage Africa’s first real-world dual-vehicle collision test with new Tiggo 9 SUV

Africa’s first real-world dual-vehicle collision test will see two identical Chery Tiggo 9 SUVs collide in a 50% offset head-on impact at 50 km/h in South Africa this August.

The test mirrors one of the country’s most dangerous real-world crash scenarios, addressing the nation’s high rate of fatal head-on collisions.

Part of Chery’s 2025 Global Safety Challenges, the trial showcases the Tiggo 9’s advanced passive and active safety systems, built to meet global five-star standards.

This August, Chery will take on an unprecedented safety challenge in South Africa, with the first real-world dual-vehicle collision test on the African continent. Two identical Tiggo 9 SUVs, built to the world’s highest safety standards, will collide in a 50% offset impact at 50 km/h. This Africa-first safety trial is more than just Chery putting its standards to the test. It’s the demonstration of its safety philosophy: that progress comes from pushing boundaries.

Road safety in South Africa faces unique challenges. Research shows that head-on collisions in the country occur more frequently and have a higher fatality rate than the global average. A Kantar survey confirms that safety has become a decisive factor (even a non-negotiable requirement) for South African car buyers. Against this backdrop, Chery will conduct its test on a long, straight paved road, accurately replicating a high-risk scenario: a 50% offset impact (on the right-hand side of the vehicle) with an oncoming vehicle.

When the two Tiggo 9 SUVs collide head-on at 50 km/h, their performance will be evaluated across multiple safety dimensions, including body structure integrity, restraint system responsiveness, airbag and curtain airbag coordination, passenger compartment stability, fuel system sealing, and post-crash rescue accessibility. This test is designed to mirror real-world accident conditions as closely as possible, providing the most authentic assessment of the Tiggo 9’s safety capabilities.

Since its global debut at the Burj Khalifa in the UAE in December 2024, the Tiggo 9 has entered key markets across the Middle East and Latin America, garnering widespread acclaim. As Chery’s flagship model, it embodies Chery’s philosophy that safety is the ultimate luxury.

The Tiggo 9 has been engineered to meet global five-star safety standards. The body structure incorporates 85% high-strength steel and 21% hot-formed steel for uncompromising protection. Enhancing its passive safety credentials are innovative features like a dual-impact-beam design, the segment’s only standard far-side airbag, and an industry-leading 2,060 mm side curtain airbag—together forming a comprehensive passive safety shield.

On the active safety front, Tiggo 9 comes equipped with 19 advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) designed to make every journey safer. Prior to this real world-challenge, the Tiggo 9 has already proven its mettle in Chery’s in-house crash tests, including a 100% full-frontal rigid barrier impact test and a demanding 32 km/h side pole impact test.

From passenger compartment integrity and airbag deployment timing to high-voltage system cut-off and post-crash readiness, the Tiggo 9 has demonstrated strong crash protection, cementing safety as one of the cornerstones of the driving experience.

The head-on collision test in South Africa is more than just a standalone event. It serves as a critical pillar of Chery’s 2025 global Safety Challenges initiative. This comprehensive program subjects vehicles to extreme conditions, such as heat, cold, dryness, humidity, high-speed conditions, and rough terrain. Through a unique combination of real-world global testing and user co-verification across strategically selected regions worldwide, Chery continues to evaluate the durability of its vehicles and the reliability of the Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) technology.

“South Africa’s high rate of serious road accidents calls for solutions that go beyond the ordinary. By replicating one of the country’s most dangerous crash scenarios, we’re not only putting the Tiggo 9’s safety systems to the test, but also demonstrating how advanced engineering can play a role in reducing the impact of real-world collisions,” commented Verene Petersen, National Brand and Marketing Manager at Chery South Africa.

Earlier demonstrations include a 53+ hour battery seawater immersion test conducted in Indonesia and an intensive battery scraping challenge completed in Mexico. The selection of South Africa for this particularly extreme collision scenario reflects Chery’s fundamental philosophy: a dedication to maintaining consistent global quality standards across all markets and conditions.

Hybrid efficiency without compromise: The Chery Tiggo Cross CSH HEV arrives in SA

Hybrid efficiency without compromise: The Chery Tiggo Cross CSH HEV arrives in SA

Chery expands the Tiggo Cross range with new Chery Super Hybrid variants, offering strong performance, impressive fuel economy (5.4L/100 km), and up to 1,000 km driving range.

Available in Comfort and Elite trims, the Tiggo Cross HEV features advanced hybrid tech, extensive standard features, and a smooth Dedicated Hybrid Transmission.

High spec meets high value, with advanced available driver assistance systems, premium features, and pricing that makes hybrid motoring more accessible.

Following the November 2024 reveal of the Tiggo Cross, Chery South Africa is expanding the lineup with a hybrid variant that offers not only strong performance but superb fuel efficiency and driving range. Available in the same grades as the standard Tiggo Cross (Comfort and Elite), the Tiggo Cross HEV provides buyers with more choice than before, and brings hybrid motoring to more people thanks to its attainable price tag.

Powering the Tiggo Cross HEV is a 1.5-litre engine which develops 71 kW and 118 N.m of torque. The addition of an electric motor and 1.83 kWh battery pack results in combined power outputs of 150 kW and 310 N.m of torque, sent to the front wheels via the marque’s Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT), which transmits power to the road smoothly and efficiently.

The Tiggo Cross HEV returns just 5.4L/100 km, making it exceptionally efficient. Furthermore, it boasts a range of 1,000 km, pushing the boundaries of what HEV models can achieve—delivering true long-distance capability without frequent refuelling stops. An intelligent start-stop system conserves fuel efficiency in everyday driving.

The comprehensive range significantly reduces the need for fuel station visits for daily commuters, saving them valuable time. For cross-city business trips or long-distance journeys, drivers enjoy complete peace of mind without range limitations or the need to meticulously plan charging routes, as is the case with battery-electric vehicles. The Tiggo Cross HEV delivers the best of both worlds, eliminating range anxiety but delivering outstanding fuel efficiency.

Daily traffic and rush-hour congestion are silent fuel wasters. The Tiggo Cross HEV’s intelligent powertrain seamlessly switches between four operating modes—Pure Electric, Series Hybrid, Parallel Hybrid, and Energy Recovery—optimising efficiency for every driving scenario. During urban low-speed cruising, the system prioritises pure electric mode to eliminate fuel consumption during vehicle acceleration from standstill.

While the Comfort HEV and Elite HEV ride on model-specific 17-inch alloy wheels, their specifications closely align with those of the standard Comfort and Elite variants. The Tiggo Cross HEV is equipped with front ventilated discs and rear disc brakes, delivering confident stopping power. A front MacPherson strut and rear torsion beam suspension setup ensures a balanced ride and composed handling, whether on smooth tarmac or rougher gravel roads.

The stylish Tiggo Cross HEV receives automatic LED headlights and LED daytime running lights, along with a sporty tailgate spoiler, chrome-plated dual exhaust finishers, and body-coloured exterior finishes. The Elite variant sports red-painted brake callipers, along with an electrically operated sunroof.

Step inside, and the Tiggo Cross HEV continues to impress with its strong standard specification levels. The soft-touch dashboard is complemented by the black leather upholstery, which, on the Elite trim, extends to the multi-function steering wheel. Ambient lighting is standard across both trims, but the Elite adds luxuries such as a six-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with a power-operated lumbar support. Both models boast automatic wipers and two-zone automatic climate control. Heated front seats are available on the Elite HEV.

On the convenience front, the Tiggo Cross HEV comes standard with keyless entry, second-row air vents, and a 60/40 split-folding rear bench.

The interior of the Tiggo Cross HEV is dominated by dual 10.25-inch screens, a digital driver’s display, and an infotainment touchscreen. The latter provides access to the comprehensive features available in the Tiggo Cross, including Bluetooth connectivity, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as a four-speaker sound system. The Elite receives a six-speaker sound system, but both trims gain a wireless mobile phone charger.

The vehicle is equipped with the latest safety features, including Traction Control, Emergency Brake Assist, Hill Descent Control, Brake Assist, and dual front, front side, and side curtain airbags. The Elite variant adds a front inter-seat airbag to the safety suite. While the Comfort HEV receives a rear-view camera (with dynamic guidelines), the Elite comes equipped with the following driver assistance features:

  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
  • Automatic Brake System (AEB)
  • Blind Spot Detection (BSD)
  • Door Opening Warning (DOW)
  • Front Collision Warning (FCW)
  • Intelligent High Beam Control (IHC)
  • Lane Change Assistance (LCA)
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA)
  • Traffic congestion assistance (TJA)
  • 360 HD Panoramic camera system

“With the Tiggo Cross CSH, we’re not just offering a hybrid—we’re delivering a solution for drivers who want performance, efficiency, and long-range capability in one package,” commented Tony Liu, CEOof Chery South Africa. “This vehicle was engineered for South African roads, from daily commutes in city traffic to weekend escapes—without the stress of finding a charge point.”

Pricing for the Tiggo Cross HEV starts at R439,900 for the Comfort and R469,900 for the Elite variant.

The Tiggo Cross HEV is backed by a comprehensive 5-year/150,000 km warranty, a 10-year/unlimited mileage (for 1st owner) battery warranty, and a 5-year/60,000 km service plan, ensuring long-term confidence and value.

Chery puts Tiggo 9 CSH flagship to the test in extreme safety demonstrations

Chery has put its range-topping SUV, the hybrid Tiggo 9 CSH, to the test with two extreme safety evaluations to demonstrate the crash protection of its vehicles. The rigorous tests – a full-front collision between two cars and a high-speed spiral rollover challenge – pushed the limits of the Tiggo 9 CSH’s passive safety features, while demonstrating the engineering behind its Chery Super Hybrid (CSH) system.

Engineered for the ultimate crash protection

In the full-frontal collision, two Tiggo 9 CSH SUVs were driven toward each other at 56 km/h. Unlike conventional fixed-barrier tests, this moving-barrier scenario generated significantly higher kinetic energy, replicating real-world crash dynamics. Upon impact, the front cabins crumpled as designed, absorbing much of the force. Airbags deployed immediately, cushioning and protecting the occupants.

The A- and B-pillars remained intact, and the cabin maintained ample survival space. Key safety systems, including door locks and hazard lights, engaged instantly. The fuel system remained unaffected, with no deformation or leakage.

“With Chery Super Hybrid, we’re not just building performance-driven vehicles. We’re engineering safety into every layer of the design,” said Verene Petersen, National Marketing Manager for Chery South Africa. “These extreme tests are our way of proving that Chery safety isn’t just claimed, it’s demonstrated.”

Built to survive the most extreme rollover crashes

In the high-speed spiral rollover, a Tiggo 8 CSH sped onto an inclined ramp at 68 km/h, executing a 180-degree roll before plunging from a height of just over 1.1 metres. The test recreated the dual challenges of kinetic impact and structural deformation, mirroring the extreme conditions of real-world accidents. The cabin of the Tiggo 9 CSH remained fully intact, with no deformation to the A-, B-, or C-pillars, and the passenger survival space was preserved.

The battery system implemented a cutoff in milliseconds, eliminating the risk of electrolyte leakage, thermal runaway, or fire. All safety systems functioned perfectly: the airbags deployed as designed, seatbelt pre-tensioners activated precisely, and both the hazard lights and emergency response systems were triggered automatically.
