Chery enters next phase with Fourth-Generation Powertrains

Dubbed the 4.0 Era All-Domain Power Architecture, the new powertrain design promises world-leading levels of energy and thermal efficiency, low fuel consumption and low emissions. It also allows complete scope for a series of internal combustion engines, hybrid, electric and hydrogen powertrains under the same design principles.

“From a small manufacturer for the domestic Chinese market to a global powerhouse and the largest Chinese vehicle exporter, Chery has been accelerating non-stop into the future,” says Toni Liu, Executive Deputy General Manager of Chery South Africa.

“Chery’s rapid acceleration is perhaps best seen in its powertrain technology. Since launching its first engine in 1999, Chery has created three generations of engines, won the China Heart Award for Chinese-designed and -built powertrains with nine different engines and built more than 10 million engines for vehicles across the world.

At present, Chery has three fourth-generation engines being developed. These engines are already in their bench calibration phase and will soon make their way to certain production models.

Chery has also finalised the design of its first fifth-generation engine and plans on finalising testing by 2024. This engine, a 1.5 litre turbocharged petrol engine with hybrid power and direct injection, is being developed in partnership with AVL, one of the world’s largest engine development specialists.

The newest generation of Chery engines includes new technologies such as high efficiency combustion, low pressure adaptive turbochargers and so-called infinite friction reduction to create the best thermal efficiency possible.

Preliminary laboratory testing on these engines shows that they have already met their target of an industry-leading 45% thermal efficiency.

Integrated Powertrain Planning

One of the core tenets of Chery’s rapid engine development and success is the focus on incorporating all major drivetrain technologies in different, but simultaneous development programmes.

These technologies – petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric and hydrogen – not only ensure that Chery vehicles are future proof, but they enable the company to cross-pollinate each type of drivetrain with the technologies and developments from the other drivetrain lines.

One example of the benefit of co-developing different drivetrains is seen in the new DHT Dedicated Hybrid Transmission system.

The new DHT system incorporates dual electric motors, 11 gear combinations, dual driveshafts and 9 independently controlled driving modes to create the most efficient, smoothest and most immediate power delivery system.

The DHT hybrid project was first unveiled in May 2021, and by February 2022 the first version, the 3DHT125 hybrid powertrain, made its public debut in the new Chery Tiggo 8 Pro e+.

Shortly after the launch of the Tiggo 8 Pro e+, Chery announced that it had passed the appraisal stage of the Ministry of Science and Technology for the development of a hybrid engine that uses a deep Miller cycle high combustion process.

This additional powertrain will be used in mass production models, and the insights from this development process will be used to improve other drivetrains as well.

In March 2022, Chery announced a new three-gear hybrid transmission for Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles. This new system, and an upcoming single-gear transmission, will be used in future Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles and will be ideal for compact and subcompact vehicles in this category.

Lastly, Chery is rapidly developing its pure hydrogen powertrain systems.

As far back as the World Manufacturing Convention 2019, Chery exhibited its third-generation hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles with 30kW fuel-cell stacks, which can be topped up with hydrogen in three minutes and run for more than 700 kilometers.

“Chery 4.0 Era All-Domain Power Architecture covers fuel, hybrid, electric and hydrogen energy, and basically every possible roadmap known for automobile power technologies in the next 30 years has been included. Next, we will follow a step-by-step strategy and gradually realise complete self-development of electric products,” said a Chery powertrain expert.

Chery shows its true colours with charity campaign

Chery South Africa used the much-anticipated launch of its new Tiggo 7 Pro SUV to bring its #WithCheryWithLove campaign to life.

The company yesterday used the media launch of its new midrange luxury SUV to host the team of Tswara Ganang Children’s Home in Gauteng and donate food, sweet gift packs and blankets. The donations were carried in the back of the Tiggo 7 Pros.

“The #WithCheryWithLove campaign first started in China and soon spread across Russia, South America and the Middle East as our customers caught on to the idea of doing good, while having fun in your Chery,” says Bianca van Staden, National Marketing and Brand Manager of Chery South Africa.

The first #WithCheryWithLove campaign started when the Head Office in China invited the various countries in its network to find worthy causes and support them under this hashtag. It also welcomed customers to share their experiences behind the wheel of a Chery with the same hashtag.

Chery South Africa did not waste any time joining #WithCheryWithLove. The first invitations to dealers and the public were issued as soon as the Tiggo 4 Pro was launched and they repeated this when the Tiggo 8 Pro touched down.

For instance, during Easter Chery invited customers to share their experiences behind the wheel of a Chery with the #WithCheryWithLove hashtag. A handful of lucky customers won large hampers.

Prior to the launch of the Tiggo 7 Pro, Chery South Africa, its dealer network, suppliers and friends also joined hands in an ad hoc #WithCheryWithLove campaign and collected over R300 000 in cash, water and donations for old age homes and people affected by the floods in KwaZulu-Natal.

“For the Tiggo 7 Pro, we asked our network of friends and dealers to suggest a worthy cause. That is when Tswara Ganang popped up on our radar.

“We realise that the economy is under pressure, which means that many organisations such as Tswara Ganang must focus their available budget on providing food and basic services to children. That is why we decided to add the sweet gift packs and blankets to our donation,” says Tony Liu, Executive Deputy General Manager of Chery South Africa.

“We want to continue the #WithCheryWithLove campaign throughout the years ahead in an effort to move even closer to our customers and become the warm and supporting brand that we are known for throughout the world.

“Customers and friends of the brand should not hesitate to share their ideas for supporting worthy causes using that hashtag. Where we can assist, we will certainly do so.”

Chery yesterday launched the Tiggo 7 Pro as a luxury mid-range SUV to bridge the gap between the Tiggo 4 Pro luxury compact SUV and the Tiggo 8 Pro flagship. The model features a host of luxury andtechnologically advanced features as standard, including LED lighting, multiple digital touch screens for all controls and vehicle information and five-star safety.

The Tiggo 7 Pro is available at R409 900 for the Distinctive model and R444 900 for the Executive model, that is also equipped with a Panoramic Sunroof and additional luxury and safety features.

“The growth of Chery in South Africa has surprised even our most optimistic dealers and colleagues. We cannot wait to show the new Tiggo 7 Pro to customers and welcome more people to the Chery family and we look forward to our next #WithCheryWithLove project,” says Liu.

Chery, dealers and friends deliver water and blankets to KwaZulu-Natal

A large delivery truck filled to the brim with containers of water, blankets and food have left the Chery South Africa head office in Johannesburg, bound for KwaZulu-Natal.

The shipment of water in easily transportable containers, blankets and food will be delivered at various Chery dealerships in Durban and surrounds. From here, the dealers will use their own delivery infrastructure, staff and even customers to deliver water to needy communities, old age homes and clinics.

“This is the first of hopefully many such initiatives by Chery, its dealers and staff. We hope it acts as a small but powerful gesture of our intention to be a very active and supportive part of the society in every town and city that we are active in and of civil society as a whole in South Africa,” says Tony Liu, Executive Deputy General Manager of Chery South Africa.

Liu explains that the Chery South Africa team sprang into action after reading about the continued lack of clean water in parts of KwaZulu-Natal worst affected by the floods that started on 8 April this year.

“We realised that we have a network of over 60 dealers and an even-wider network of partners, suppliers, colleagues and friends that we could call upon. So, with seed donation from Chery South Africa, we invited everyone in our network to join the cause and they truly surprised us with their speed of action and selfless generosity,” says Jay Jay Botes, National Sales Manager of Chery South Africa.

Since the call went out to its network a few days ago, Chery has managed to purchase over R300 000 in purified water and ship it to KwaZulu-Natal. In this, it is supported by its main logistics partner VDS, who offered one of their largest trucks and fuel for free to ship the water to Chery dealers in the province.

Chery will coordinate the logistics for the water deliveries from its head office, where it will be in contact with each of the Chery dealerships in the province to help with deliveries.
Each dealer has already identified less fortunate individuals and institutions, such as old age homes and clinics to deliver the water to, using their fleet of Chery vehicles and those of customers who have kindly offered to help.

The initiative has also received the support of Chery Global, who immediately recognised it as a worthy cause in line with its global With Chery, With Love campaign. In South Africa, this campaign is run by Bianca van Staden, National Marketing and Brand Manager of Chery South Africa.

Chery actively encourages, and supports, campaigns of active citizenship and good old neighbourly love in every country in which it is active. Chery customers are encouraged to share their actions, ideas and opportunities with Chery, using the #WithCheryWithLove tag.

“The last couple of years have reminded all of us of the importance of being a good member of society and to help where we can. If this water delivery campaign is anything to go by, then South Africans have this neighbourly spirit in spades!” says Van Staden.

Any Chery owner who would like to support any future water deliveries to KwaZulu-Natal are invited to make contact with Chery on their website (chery.co.za), their social media channels or chat to their local dealer for more information.

Chery to launch Tiggo 7 Pro in South Africa

The first shipment of Chery Tiggo 7 Pro models is en route to South Africa.

The local introduction of Chery’s third unique model range follows the success of the model range in other parts of the world, notably Russia, the Middle East and South America.

“Chery is a much-loved brand in many countries that have a similar buying profile, road network and infrastructure as South Africa. For instance, in Russia, the model has been so successful that it has become one of the most popular SUVs in its class.” says Tony Liu, Executive Deputy General Manager of Chery South Africa.

The Tiggo 7 Pro has seen similar success in South America. In Peru, for instance, the Tiggo 7 Pro was the model range with the most votes in the recent Most Loved Brands competition. This helped Chery to earn the title as Peru’s Most Loved Chinese Brand.

In Chile, the Tiggo 7 Pro has boosted Chery sales to a top 5 position in the country, with other models such as the Tiggo 8 Pro also performing exceedingly well.

Further East in Qatar, the Tiggo 7 Pro was recently recognised as the best-selling SUV in the two-wheel drive class. This after only six months on the market in that country.

“We first launched the Tiggo 7 Pro in Russia, where it quickly proved its mettle in both hot and cold conditions. The next phase has seen the Tiggo 7 Pro land in markets such as Brazil, Egypt, Iraq, Qatar, Kuwait, Uruguay and the Philippines.

“Having now been fully tested and homologated for South Africa, we can join the global launch schedule and plan to deliver the first Tiggo 7 Pro models to customers in the next couple of weeks,” says Liu.

The Tiggo 7 Pro will slot in above the Tiggo 4 Pro and below the Tiggo 8 Pro, in price, specification and size.

The model has been designed to appeal to the upper-midrange SUV market, with a comprehensive range of specifications, above average luxury and the modern technology that Chery has become known for in South Africa.

All Tiggo 7 Pro models will be powered by Chery’s next-generation 1.5 litre turbo-petrol engine with 108 kW and 210 Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a new CVT transmission with 9 in-built gear steps.

As on other Tiggo Pro models, the Tiggo 7 Pro has no shortage of technology. This includes a digital instrument panel, a full HD infotainment system and digital controls for the climate control centre.

“Many of the features that our South African customers have come to love, will also be available on the Tiggo 7 Pro range. These include our omnidirectional airbag system, our 360-degree camera array for easy low-speed manoeuvring and parking and our Chery Voice Command system,” says Liu.

Chery will announce more details of the Tiggo 7 Pro range closer to the official launch date.

Three engines, three gears, nine modes and 11 speeds

Chery confirms productions specifications of new DHT Hybrid system

Chery, China’s leading vehicle exporter and a global leader in propulsion technology, has confirmed the specifications of its new-generation hybrid system.

The DHT Hybrid system sets a new standard for hybrid propulsion. It lays the foundation for the company’s transition from internal combustion to a portfolio of petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric and fuel cell powered vehicles.

“The new hybrid system has a unique operating model that is based, first and foremost, on customers’ needs and driving patterns. In China, this technology officially introduces the next generation of hybrid propulsion to the market,” says Tony Liu, Executive Deputy General Manager of Chery South Africa.

To best explain the new system, Chery has adopted a short slogan called: Three engines, three gears, nine modes and 11 speeds.

Three engines

At the heart of the new hybrid system is Chery’s use of three ‘engines’. The first engine is a hybrid-specific version of its popular 1.5 turbo-petrol engine, which delivers 115 kW and 230 Nm of torque. It is worth noting that the platform is also ready for a hybrid-specific version of its 2.0 turbo-petrol engine.

The turbo-petrol engine is ‘hybrid-specific’, as it is lean burning and has best-in-class efficiency. It is paired with two electric motors, which combine to offer the three engines mentioned above.

The two electric motors have power outputs of 55 kW and 160 Nm and 70 kW and 155 Nm respectively. They are both fitted with a unique fixed-point oil injection cooling system, that not only allows the motors to run at a lower operating temperature, but that extends the operating life to well beyond industry standards.

During its development, these electric motors ran faultlessly for more than 30 000 hours and 5 million combined testing kilometres. This promises a real-world service life of at least 1,5 times the industry average.

Lastly, Chery has tested the electric motors to offer a power transmission efficiency of 97.6%. This is the highest in the world.

Three gears

To best deliver the power from its three engines, Chery has created a three-gear transmission that combines with its standard variable transmission to near infinite gear combinations. This means that whether the driver wants the lowest fuel consumption, the highest performance, the best towing capabilities or any other application specific use, it is catered for with this three gear setup.

Nine modes

The three engines and three gears are matched and managed by nine unique operating modes.

These modes create a framework for the drivetrain to deliver its best power and efficiency, while still allowing infinite variability to each driver’s needs.

The nine modes include single-motor electric only mode, dual motor pure electric performance, a direct drive from the turbo petrol engine and a parallel drive that harnesses both petrol and electric power.

There are also a mode specific for charging while parked and a mode for charging while driving.

 11 speeds

Lastly, the new hybrid system offers 11 speed modes. These again combine with the engines and operating modes to offer a range of application specific settings, while still allowing for individual variability for each driver.

The 11 speeds cover all possible vehicle usage scenes, including low speed driving (for instance while moving in heavy traffic), long distance driving, mountain driving where low-end torque is welcome, overtaking, expressway driving, driving on slippery conditions, where the dual-axle motors will drive all four wheels for better traction, and urban commuting.

In its production form, the hybrid system a combined system of 240 kW from the 2-wheel drive version and a staggering 338 kW combined power from the four-wheel drive system. The former has a tested 0-100 km acceleration time of less than 7 seconds and the latter dispenses of the 100 km acceleration run in 4 seconds.

Says Liu: “The production version of our new hybrid system shows both the technical expertise of Chery and its engineers and the exciting future of the vehicles earmarked for South Africa.

“We are also excited to see how our new hybrid technology will lay the foundation for a complete new range of vehicle solutions where we utilise this systems innovations in engine management, transmission and power delivery in many different applications.”

All new Chery platforms are future proof and will be able to house a complete range of propulsion options, including electric, petrol and hybrid systems.

Chery opens its own ‘Bell Labs’ in Anhui

Chery has officially inaugurated its newest, and arguably most advanced, research facility in Anhui, China.

The Anhui New Energy and Connected Vehicle Industry Research Institute (Anhui Research Institute) was officially opened in March 2022 during the annual Anhui Innovation Pavilion. It will house a core part of Chery’s future research efforts and offer a home to other industry innovators.

“With the new Research Institute, Chery has created its own ‘Bell Laboratories’. It will not only contribute to the future product range and vehicle technologies of Chery but make a meaningful contribution to the automotive industry as a whole,” says Tony Liu, Executive Deputy General Manager of Chery South Africa.

Liu is referring to the American Bell Labs, which was created in 1925 and which is world renowned for its contribution to telephony, communications and digital technologies. Such was the contribution by Bell Labs that it has delivered 9 Nobel Prize winners and won several Emmys, a Grammy and even an Academy Award.

“Chery has invested heavily in internal combustion engines in recent years. We believe that it will remain a core part of our product mix, on its own and as part of a hybrid propulsion solution. Our new Anhui Research Institute will focus heavily on new energy vehicles and intelligent connectivity,” says Liu.

With its focus on future technologies, the new Research Institute in Anhui will have an automotive research division and an industrial incubator. The former will focus on relieving the major bottleneck in new technology development and testing and the latter will offer a home to innovators and businesses that seek to develop future-proof technologies for the automotive sector.

Both divisions of the new Anhui Research Institute will benefit from the world-class facilities, which includes the latest testing equipment and even a track for the testing of self-driving vehicles.

The Research Institute and its occupants will also benefit from Chery’s global research and development expertise. Chery has six major R&D facilities across Europe, Asia and North America. Together, these centres have already registered 14 000 patents, with a further 9 000 in an application phase. This makes Chery a Top 100 Innovator globally.

“The new Research Institute has an incredibly exciting slate of new innovations and future plans. It will focus, among other things, on electric propulsion, battery technology – including storage, fast charging and battery swopping, and the intelligent in-car and between-car communication technologies that will make self-driving a reality for all,” says Liu.

Enjoy your First Class with the Tiggo 8 Pro

  • Luxury is standard across the range
  • Seven leather seats make Tiggo 8 Pro ideal for business and family travel
  • Award-winning 1.6 TGDI engine with 7DCT transmission standard
  • Tiggo 8 Pro now available at 50 dealers nationwide

You can have your cake and eat it.

With the launch of the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro, Chery is showing South Africans that the world has changed – for the better.

Gone are the days of quoting a list price that excludes all but the most basic accessories. Chery takes a full set of luxuries as its starting point and then builds from there. And when it comes to the flagship model range, it is First Class all the way.

“In planning for the South African introduction of the Tiggo 8 Pro, we used the analogy of first-class travel. Once in first class, your every need is satisfied. There are no hidden costs, no surprise bills, and luxury is a given.

“That is what we have created for customers of the Tiggo 8 Pro, from design, to seating, to performance and of course to luxuries. We invite customers to enjoy their First Class,” says Tony Liu, Executive Deputy General Manager of Chery South Africa.

Well received the world over

South Africa is the first right-hand drive country in the world to receive the Tiggo 8 Pro, and it arrives shortly after its debut in other large markets such as South America, Russia and the Middle East.

In Chile, the latest country to launch the Tiggo 8 Pro, the launch drew the attention of media, customers and celebrities, and sales have started exceptionally well with Chery ranked as one of the five most popular and best-selling brands in the country.

In Russia, where the Tiggo 8 Pro has been on sale for a number of months, it is not only one of the best-selling luxury SUVs on the market, but it was selected as the Most Technological SUV and the Most Popular Medium-sized SUV in the 2021 SUV of the Year Awards.

“We are very pleased with the positive feedback that we have received from our customers and the media in South Africa. And the inclusion of the Tiggo 4 Pro in the SA Car of the Year competition is a good sign that Chery’s Tiggo Pro range will reach the same heights in South Africa as it has done elsewhere in the world,” says Liu.

A striking new design language

Exterior design

The Tiggo 8 Pro, while clearly sharing the family genes first shown by the Tiggo 4 Pro, is the first vehicle to demonstrate Chery’s next-generation design language.

Called “Movement Design”, the new design mixes bionics and aesthetics to create a vehicle that has a fluid design that hides its size, while maintaining a striking presence. This design also aims to incorporate the human and technological elements into one, as is best seen in the luxurious interior.

From outside, the striking three-dimensional grille is inspired by the stars in the galaxies. It features very tasteful chrome “stars” in a black sky, which draw your eye into the grille and clearly accentuate its design and depth.

Two fully automatic matrix-LED headlamps with dual daytime running lights – called Tiger Eyes – flank the grille. These headlamps are at the heart of the vehicle’s striking visual signature and are standard in all Tiggo 8 Pro vehicles.

The headlights connect to the rear lights through the shoulder line, which runs – in very unusual fashion – in a continuous line from the front to the rear of the SUV.

Other unique design elements in this new Movement Design Tiggo 8 Pro include subtle but striking satin chrome finishes across the lower air intake, which double as a strike plate, the fog lamps, grille, windows and lower door section.

Add to these two load-bearing continuous chromed roof rails and a panoramic sunroof (added to the Executive model) and it is clearly a first-class SUV.

To round off the design, Chery has added LED rear lights with dual fog lights and a high-mounted central stop light, illuminated threshold sills and 18” alloy wheels with a chrome and black design.

Interior design

Inside, all major controls have been digitised in three separate screens. The first is the instrumentation panel, which is a large horizontal 12.3” high-resolution screen. The screen not only displays the necessary vehicle information, but dynamically adapts to the driver’s needs and can display much of the infotainment and mobile phone information as well.

A second screen – 8” wide – takes over all climate-control functions. It is worth noting that the climate control system is fully automatic, dual-zone and fitted with an N95-grade air purifying system as standard. Executive models further receive a third air conditioning system for the rearmost seats.

Mounted in the centre of the dashboard and forming the heart of the vehicle controls is the infotainment system. This 10.25” high-definition floating multimedia display takes care of the audio controls, display from your mobile phone via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and the image from the reverse camera.

Speaking of the infotainment system and central console, all Tiggo 8 Pro models offer wireless charging, intelligent voice control and crisp clear music through a SONY sound system with 8 surround sound speakers as standard.

First class space and luxury

In step with its first-class positioning, the cabin of the Tiggo 8 Pro is a truly luxurious place to be.

All seven seats are leather clad on the Distinctive model, and should you opt for the Executive model, the trim is upgraded to black and brown leather with a modern diamond-stitched pattern.

All Tiggo 8 Pro models have a six-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat with memory setting, and in the Executive model, the front passenger also receives four-way electrical adjustment and electrically adjustable lumbar support.

It is worth noting that the seats have been ergonomically designed and feature high-density cushioning to offer the best support. This is especially true for the two front seats that are shaped to offer greater hip and upper-body support.

The rear seats in both models can fold completely flat in a 60:40 configuration.

Aside from the ample space, Chery has ensured that all the creature comforts are taken care of. This includes adjustable rear seats, three USB ports throughout the cabin, a 12V charging port in front and a coat rack and armrest in the rear.

To round off the first-class interior, Chery has added ambient lighting and, in the Executive model, privacy glass.

No compromise on safety

First class travel implies the best of all worlds and this is equally true when it comes to safety.

The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro has six airbags as standard across the range. These airbags are all omnidirectional and have been designed to create the maximum protection to all occupants. Chery calls this innovation its Guard Ring, which keeps occupants safe at all times.

Also standard across the range is the full list of safety features usually expected in far more expensive SUVs. This includes Traction Control (TCS), Roll Stability Control (RSC), ABS brakes with Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA) and of course ISOFIX child seat anchors.

For help at parking speeds, the Tiggo 8 Pro has rear park distance control (PDC), a rear-view camera with dynamic guides and a 360-degree parking view from its cameras mounted in the nose, rear and sides of the vehicle.

The Tiggo 8 Pro further has auto-locking on drive, remote car locking and automatic window closing, tyre pressure monitoring (TPM), hill assist and downhill ascent control (HAC) an anti-theft alarm and keyless entry with a push button start as standard.

To further enhance the driving experience in the Executive model, Chery has added a comprehensive, intelligent safety package as standard. This uses an array of complex sensors to offer Lane Departure Warning (LDW), Automatic Cruise Control, Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB), Traffic Sign Recognition (TSC), Intelligent High-beam Control (IHC), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSD), Front Collision Warning (FCW), an emergency Brake Override System (BOS) and a Door Open Warning and Prevention (DOW) system as standard.

Chery Power

The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro is powered by one of Chery’s award-winning turbo-petrol engines with direct injection and intelligent control.

The 1.6 TGDI was lauded in the China Heart engine competition for its high-tech design, which allows the engine to reach previously unheard-of levels of efficiency that benefit both power and fuel consumption.

As fitted to the Tiggo 8 Pro, the 1.6 TGDI delivers a maximum power output of 145 kW at 5 500 rpm and a solid 290 Nm across a notably wide powerband between 2 000 rpm and 4 400 rpm. The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission (7DCT) that delivers power to the front wheels.

To best utilise the power and smooth engine characteristics, Chery has tuned the electric power steering system for improved feedback and has added Standard, Eco and Sport driving modes. The steering further offers Eco and Sport driving modes, where the feedback and feel of the steering system adjust to the driver intent.

1-million reasons to buy

The Chery Tiggo 8 Pro will follow the example set by its smaller sibling, the Tiggo 4 Pro, and offers a comprehensive 10-year / 1-million-kilometre engine warranty. Only the original owner is afforded this warranty and it is not transferrable. A 5-year / 150 000 km general warranty that is linked to the vehicle is standard, as is a 5-year comprehensive roadside assistance plan.

Chery will also offer customers a comprehensive 5-year / 60 000 km service plan as standard with its flagship Tiggo 8 Pro.

Pricing

There are two models available in the Tiggo 8 Pro range:

Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Distinctive – R496 900.00

Chery Tiggo 8 Pro Executive – R546 900.00

The Tiggo 8 Pro is now available at 50 dealers nationwide.

Chery flagship ready to showcase the best of breed

It is confirmed. The team at Chery South Africa and its fast-growing dealer network are ready for the launch of its flagship and image-bearer, the Tiggo 8 Pro.

Penned for launch during February, the Tiggo 8 Pro is officially Chery’s flagship. It arrives shortly after the Tiggo 4 Pro, and together they will bookend the range on opposite ends of the SUV spectrum.

“It is very fitting that we kick off 2022 with the introduction of the Tiggo 8 Pro. The Tiggo 4 Pro did everything we asked of it. It introduced the Chery brand to South Africa and showcased our design, durability and general accessibility. In contrast, the Tiggo 8 Pro will show South Africa why we are a technology and design leaders in China and globally,” says Tony Liu, Executive Deputy General Manager of Chery South Africa.

As the flagship of the range, the Tiggo 8 Pro will be packed to the brim with luxury, safety features and especially technology.

Among these are Chery’s comprehensive passive and active protection systems, including its omnidirectional (6) airbag arrangement, which is standard across the whole Tiggo 8 Pro range.

All Tiggo 8 Pro models will also boast safety and convenience features such as an Around View camera system, stability control (ESP) and traction control and a digital tyre pressure monitoring system.

The Tiggo 8 Pro, as SUV range leader, will also introduce the evolution of the latest Chery “MOVEMENT DESIGN” language, which was created by the Chery design team as a synergy of bionics and aesthetics.

At the centre of the new design language is the chiselled imposing front face, a three-dimensional “Galaxy inspired” grille, the “Tiger Eye” Matrix type LED headlamps and multi-layered LED daytime running lights – all combining to create a visually appealing yet aggressive look.

Students of vehicle design will also notice the use of a continuous shoulder line, which runs from nose to tail. This is a rare occurrence in the automotive world, and it emphasises the length, space and flagship nature of the Tiggo 8 Pro.

The Tiggo 8 Pro will also clearly communicate the group’s model planning philosophy, meaning that every Tiggo 8 Pro model will have a very high specification level, especially when it comes to safety and comfort.

“We do not believe in compromising on our safety and luxury levels, so every Tiggo 8 Pro will have six airbags, ESP and traction control, and even our newest-generation 10,25” floating multimedia screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. For good measure, all models will be fitted with our high-grade quilted leather seats and our multi-zone climate control system with N95-grade air filtering,” says Liu.

The Tiggo 8 Pro lands in South Africa shortly after Chery started its nationwide Legacy Customer campaign.

This campaign invitingly opens the doors of Chery dealers to any existing Chery customer who may have bought a previous-generation vehicle from the former independent importers.

“We are welcoming each and every Chery owner to visit us and make contact. Not only will we be able to service their vehicles and honour any existing warranties, but we will show them the quantum leap in design, technology and safety that has since made Chery a global force and China’s largest vehicle exporter,” says Liu.

Chery makes history as China’s biggest vehicle exporter

  • Chery nearing two decades as top exporter in China
  • Nearly two million international customers now part of the Chery family
  • Chery still the fastest growing auto brand in China

The Chinese automotive industry has successfully weathered the storm of the past two years and none more so than Chery.
According to industry sales data, Chery manufactured 961 926 vehicles in 2021, despite disruptions such as a shortage of electronic components, shipping delays and restrictions on sales in many international markets.

Of its total production, Chery exported 269 154 vehicles or nearly 30% of its production volume to international markets. This makes Chery China’s largest vehicle exporter, a position that it has held for the past 19 years in a row.

“As China’s largest vehicle exporter and one of its best known vehicle brands, Chery is now comfortable in many of the largest automotive markets in the world. In fact, two million of our ten million current customers are in markets outside China,” says Tony Liu Executive Deputy General Manager of Chery South Africa.
Liu says that Chery has not only found new customers, but also many more fans in its major export markets.

For instance, in Russia, the Tiggo 8 Pro was voted the Most Popular Chinese SUV, Most Technologically Advanced SUV and it earned the award as the automotive media’s Most Popular Medium-sized SUV.

In Qatar, the Tiggo 7 Pro was voted the country’s best selling SUV after it became the top-selling SUV a mere three months after its introduction in the country.
In similar fashion, the Chery Arrizo 6 was voted Brazil’s Best Car by one of the largest automotive publications in the country.
“And in South Africa, the SA Guild of Motoring Journalists has selected the Chery Tiggo 4 Pro – our first model ¬– as one of the semi-finalists for the 2022 SA Car of the Year competition. We are truly honoured to be on the shortlist after such a brief time in the country,” says Liu.

Technological Innovation – Chery’s passport to new markets

Known informally across the world as Technological Chery, Chery has always considered technology as its passport to new markets.
This is true of its range of proprietary technologies and its next-generation petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles and also of its investment in durability and reliability as a cornerstone of all new innovation.

In China, these investments in technology, duraxbility and reliability have earned Chery nine awards in the Chinese Heart Engine Awards since 2006. Most recently, the Chery TGDI-range of engines and particularly its 2.0 litre turbo-petrol engine was singled out as one of the best and most energy efficient engines in the country.

“Much has been said about our range of new engines and alternative energy powertrains. Less is known about our Chery 4.0 Global Architecture. This platform is not only one of the safest and most structurally rigid platforms in the world, but it can easily be adapted to carry any of our new powertrains, allowing Chery to rapidly and easily adapt to any market’s power needs and regulatory environment.

Quality – The stepping stone to growth

Chery considered quality as its second major growth pillar – both the quality of the product and of its customer service.

“In today’s highly competitive market, quality is the table stakes that merely ensure your entry into the market. That is why Chery South Africa has completely changed the rules of the game with a one million, ten-year mechanical warranty,” says Liu.

“We were able to offer this unmatched warranty thanks to the incredible effort of our engineering and testing departments in China. Each new Chery is designed according to the Chery Production System (CPS) to the highest standards and the models are tested to destruction in some of the world’s most extreme conditions, such as in the Russian ice fields, the Saudi Arabian deserts and of course in South Africa.”

In its endeavour to build vehicles to the highest possible quality standards, Chery has partnered with many of the world’s largest component manufacturers. These include Bosh, Continental and Siemens with which it shares vehicle testing and development programmes.

The results of this focus on quality and global partnerships were evident in the recent 46th International Convention on Quality Control Circles (ICQCC) which was held in India. At this important conference, Chery won its fifth Gold Medal for quality and innovation.

“This means that Chery can rightly claim its place alongside some of South Africa’s most-loved vehicles as a brand that won’t let you or your family down, no matter how long and far you drive it,” says Liu.

Going Up – Chery to accelerate its globalisation drive

The third and final pillar in Chery’s drive to becoming one of the world’s most successful and most loved automotive brands is to speed up its globalisation drive, which it calls Going Up.

This, explains Liu, counter intuitively means that Chery has increased its local focus on every market in which it operates.

“To become part of a country and be a well-loved brand, you must care about the things that your host country cares about.

“This is why we have carte blanche to support the pleasures and help with the problems of our fellow countrymen. In Chile, Ecuador and other South American countries this meant a comprehensive sponsorship of the biggest soccer teams.
“In other markets, it includes support for earthquake relief, large public welfare programmes and support for education initiatives and poverty relief. As we find our feet in South Africa and Africa, we will make it our goal to support similar projects here,” says Liu.

Tiggo 8 Pro – Coming Soon

Chery will take the next step in its local growth strategy with the imminent introduction of the Chery Tiggo 8 Pro. As the flagship of the highly popular Tiggo Pro range, the Tiggo 8 Pro will showcase the best that Chery has to offer in terms of fuel-efficient performance, comfort and luxury.

“The Pro range has been our most successful model range to date and with the success of the Tiggo 4 Pro in South Africa, we have no reason do doubt that it will be the same in South Africa. We believe that the Tiggo 8 Pro is the best personification of our drive for Technological Innovation, Quality and of Going Up, and we cannot wait to show it to South Africans in the coming weeks,” says Liu.
